Description

Crowd and dignitaries watch laying the cornerstone of the Evansville Furniture Exposition Co. building at 123 NW 4th St., formerly 100-106 Upper 4th St. Most references call this the Furniture Building or Furniture Exchange Building, without Evansville being attached to it (there was an Evansville Furniture Co., but it was never located here). Built in 1909, this served as a merchandise mart, with 60,000 square feet of display space for furniture vendors. In 1940 the name was changed to the Court Building (it is across Vine St. from the old 1890 courthouse), and is the same today.
