Description

Corner of Walnut St. and 9th St. On the right is Walnut School at 910 Chestnut St.-216 SE 9th St. This building, facing Walnut St., dates to 1913, although there were earlier buildings facing 9th St. (1867) and Chestnut St. (1894). The school was variously known as one of these names or some combination over the years. The original 9th St. school was torn down to build this one. At some time during its existence this was a colored school. This building was razed around 1981, and in 2009 any remaining buildings were also razed. The Centre (entertainment venue) now stands at this location. At the very end of the street (middle background) can be seen a sign for Deep Vein Coal Co., which was located at 100 E. Walnut St.
