Description
United States Marine Hospital at 916 W Ohio St. It was built by the federal government on the banks of the Ohio River to tend to ill and injured river men. This is the original Marine Hospital, built in 1856. It was used as a hospital for soldiers during the Civil War. It discontinued operation in 1870 and St. Marys Hospital renovated it and moved in 2 years later. In 1894 St. Marys moved to a new location and this building was a tenement until it was razed circa 1912. A new marine hospital was opened in 1888 at a different location and operated until 1947. This was a forerunner of a veterans' hospital. SEE ALSO MSS 181-1085.
