Union Township is the southwestern most township in Vanderburgh County and is very sparsely populated because it lies within the Ohio River floodplain. A map of the townships shows this one looking like a balloon hanging into the Ohio River. Dogtown comes from the name of a popular tavern (began sometime after 1915) located here, housed in what was an 1889 Cypress Post Office and Saloon. The tavern is no longer in business.
