Description

Top of one of the 4 corner cupolas. This is the one at the corner of Court St. and NW 4th St., casting its shadow on the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum at 300 Court St. The Coliseum, a 66,000 square foot neoclassical facility at the axis of Fourth and Court streets, was erected in 1917 as a tribute to Vanderburgh County's veterans of both the American Civil and Spanish-American wars. This venue can still seat 2,400 visitors (more than 4,000 if they're standing). This building still stands, but the interior is in poor condition. The Vanderburgh County Courthouse at 201 NW 4th St. was completed in 1890. The building still stands, but is now referred to as the old courthouse, as government offices moved into another building in 1969. (It would not have served as a courthouse at the time of this photograph.) The courthouse spans the block between NW 4th St. and NW 5th St., bounded by Vine St. and Court St. The courthouse sits on ground that was once the turnaround for the Wabash and Erie Canal. This photograph shows a wider view of the downtown area, with the Ohio River in the background.
