Description

Bridge over the Wabash River between New Harmony, IN and Illinois. A private company, the Big Wabash Bridge Company of Carmi, Illinois built the bridge as a toll bridge in 1928. In 1941 Congress established a three member panel known as the White County Bridge Commission to operate the bridge. The bridge was built for $535,796 but when it was taken over it had a debt of $945,000 according to a 1955 story from the Indianapolis News. There was a motion to clear the bridge of debt in July 1955 but tolls would still be collected to pay for $125,900 in repair costs. In 1951 a new toll booth was constructed in its current location. The bridge was closed from September 2007 to April 2008. The bridge closed permanently on May 21 2012.
