Description

Daviess County Chamber of Commerce building in Washington, IN at 1 Train Depot St. This was the Baltimore and Ohio Depot. This Mission Rival brick structure depot with a Terra-Cotta roof was built in 1906 to replace the original wood, board-and-batten Ohio and Mississippi depot that set in this same location. However, the O. & M. depot was not demolished, rather, railroad work crews literally moved the depot about 500 feet to the east of its original location to function as the B. & O. freight house near the passenger depot. This passenger depot once was a stop for almost all of the B. & O.'s top St. Louis Division passenger train, which included the famed National Limited. Again, the last regularly scheduled passenger train left here on April 30th, 1971, never to return. Located nearest the depot is actually the second track, or also referred to as, the siding. In 1952, the line nearest the depot was actually the mainline. This changed when the B. & O. switched it usage with that of main, thus, making the Main the track that is farthest away from the depot. The second track was removed by CSX in the late 1980's, along with, several other spurs and lines in and around the Washington area. Sometime after this image was taken, the depot was sold by the railroad. Regular freight Train service past the depot on the Indiana Sub. ceased circa 2003-2004. The Relay at shops ceased to be an assigned crew point by 2014 (moved to Vincennes), as the truncation of the Illinois Sub. occurred in August of 2015. Today, the line only sees local traffic from the J780 stationed at Mitchell that goes to the Shops area to pickup and or leave cars for the J700 out of Vincennes. Rarely, there may be a special movement of equipment or storage of cars, but that is something that is truly far and few between now. Today, the renovated depot still exist and is now home to the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau.
