Description
Looking from the Ohio River back at a portion of downtown Evansville. NOTE this view is taken from the opposite direction as MSS 124-062. The tall building on the far right is the Old National Bank tower at 420 Main St. The Old State National Bank was established circa 1835. and around 1883/1885 was renamed Old National Bank. In 1916 it moved to a building immediately next to this one. In 1970 it moved into the building seen here, and the 1916 building was razed. This building still exists, but the bank has moved into a new building. The tall building just right of center is Citizens National Bank at 20 NW 3rd St. It began in Evansville in 1874 at a 1st St. location, and moved to a Main St. location in 1884 after consolidation with 2 other banks. It moved to another Main St. location in 1916 and at 10 stories tall, was the first skyscraper. At sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s the bank moved again, just a block away from the last Main St. address, to the location shown here. This is also known as the Sycamore building. This building is still standing, although today this is Fifth Third Bank. The brick building in the center is an office building, at 20 NW 1st St. The next brick building is across Sycamore St. from the office building, at 100 NW 1st St., Riverfront Condominiums. The last easily identifiable tall building is Riverside One, a luxury apartment complex at 101 Court St. This building no longer stands-today the headquarters for Vectren are in this location.
