Description

Postcard entitled, Birds Eye View, Evansville, Ind. Someone has written this note across the top, Took a trip in my air ship and this is how E. looked. The Vanderburgh County Courthouse, building with cupola, at 201 NW 4th St. was completed in 1890. The building still stands, but is now referred to as the old courthouse, as government offices moved into another building in 1969. The church spire far left is Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 211 NW 3rd St., completed in 1851. It, a school, a sisters' home, and rectory covered nearly 1/2 block. The church was struck by lightning on Easter Sunday and burned to the ground, April 3, 1950. The church spire that appears to be right across from the courthouse is the German Methodist Episcopal Church at 202 NW 4th St., built in 1865, dedicated in 1867, with a name change to 4th St. Methodist Episcopal Church in 1917. Its congregation merged with another and moved to another location, so in 1937 that building became the courthouse annex. It was razed in 1973. The congregation itself dates back to at least 1842.
