Description

Closed to all but pedestrian traffic in the 1960s, Main St. reopened to one way vehicular traffic in 2002. Shown here is the section just before 2nd St. On the left is Red Spot Paint and Varnish Co. Inc., Sales and General Office at 110 Main St. Red Spot is a local company that began in 1903. According to its website, it produced/produces ""highly engineered, high performance coatings for the automotive, appliance, cosmetics, and other industries. Seventy years later, we are still supplying these core industries and markets. You will find Red Spot coatings on just about every Ford car and truck produced in North America, including models launching next year."" Red Spot moved into a building on this site in 1919, but that facility burned in 1959 and was rebuilt in 1960 on the same location--this is probably the building seen here. This building still exists but has been extensively remodeled, but Red Spot maintains its world headquarters at another location in Evansville. The tall building on this side of the street is the Old National Bank tower at 420 Main St.--the building still exists and has tenants, but the bank headquarters are in a new building on the riverfront. On the right, the short building near the foreground is not fully identified, but was a part of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation on Google Maps in 2012, but is not currently thought to house that office. The tall building on the right that appears to be directly in front of the radio tower is at 329 Main St. Built in 1916, it has housed a variety of banks or financial institutions, but since 2012 has been luxury apartments.
