Description

The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum at 350 Court St. was built in 1916-1917 as a tribute to the men of Vanderburgh County who fought in the American Civil War and SpanishAmerican War. The severe classical Greek styling of the building was meant to heighten its sense as a memorial. The portico seen here is 105 feet wide, with Doric style columns carved at an Elletsville, IN limestone quarry. Atop the building is the flag and eagle emblem of the Grand Army of the Republic carved in bas-relief. The two statues to the left and right of the doors were designed by Rockport, IN native George H. Honig and cast in bronze in Chicago. On the left as you face the building is The Spirit of 1865, portraying the victory of the Union army, and represents war. On the right is The Spirit of 1916 and portrays the reflections of these elderly Civil War veterans, representing peace.
