Description
This Vanderburgh County Courthouse at 201 NW 4th St. was completed in 1890. The building still stands, but is now referred to as the old courthouse, as government offices moved into another building in 1969. (It would not have served as a courthouse at the time of this photograph.) The courthouse spans the block between NW 4th St. and NW 5th St., bounded by Vine St. and Court St. This sits atop one of the domes that sit on each corner of the building, as seen in MSS 184-0163. Here the angle is so extreme that the dome itself is not visible. This metal ornament does NOT sit directly on the limestone as it appears to do. The courthouse sits on ground that was once the turnaround for the Wabash and Erie Canal.
