Description
Looking down on Evansville from above the Ohio River at a portion of the downtown area. The road running alongside the river is SE Riverside Dr., and the 3 intersecting north/south streets are, from left, Court St., Vine St., and Sycamore St. The old Vanderburgh County courthouse, with the cupola, is visible just left of center of the photograph, at 201 NW 4th St. The building running between Vine St. and Sycamore St. is the rear of the old U.S. Post Office and Customs Office at 100 NW 2nd St. Both these buildings still stand but no longer serve their original purpose. Another building has been constructed in the empty lot between the old post office and the river. The brick building running parallel to the post office and behind it in this photograph is the YWCA at 418 Vine St., built in 1924 and still in operation today. The tower that is just right of center is the former Old National Bank tower at 420 Main St., which still stands, but is no longer occupied by the bank. The reverse U-shaped building nearer the river toward the right is the Hotel McCurdy at 101-111 SE 1st St., no longer functioning as a hotel.
