Description
Welborn Memorial Baptist Hospital/Welborn Clinic at 412 SE 4th St. Evansville Sanitarium opens January 18, 1894. In 1914 it expanded and was renamed Walker Hospital, and was agained renamed Welborn Walker Hospital sometime in the 1920s-early 1930s. In 1944, the hospital was sold to the First Baptist Church in Evansville, and subsequently named Welborn Memorial Baptist Hospital. In 1999 this hospital was sold to St. Mary's Hospital (now called St. Vincent's). The hospital eventually closed, but funds from its sale created what is now the Welborn Baptist Foundation, a charitable organization that supports the area and mission of its initial hospital. These buildings still stand and continue to house healthcare facilities. The clinic shown here began in 1951. In 2008 it was sold to Deaconess Hospital (it was owned separately from the hospital and thus not part of the hospital's sale to St. Mary's). The medical groups of Welborn Clinic merged with those of Deaconess and today it operates as one of 20 Deaconess Clinics, one of which is near this location.
