Description
This is a panel from a mural on the 4th St. side of The Baby Shop, Inc. at 404 Main St. It shows the Public Museum in 1904. n the city was built. It was vacated in 1971 when Central High School moved, and razed in 1973. The first public museum was in a personal residence at 715 Upper Water St., originally built before 1850 by Elisa Harrison, publisher of the Evansville Gazette. Robert Barnes, a board member of Evansville National Bank bought it next and possibly did some remodeling. Sometime before 1889 it was purchased by Uel W. Armstrong, president of Armstrong Brothers Furniture Company. After he vacated it, it became the Public Museum in 1904. Because it was of frame construction, its condition deteriorated over time and it was razed in 1910. Interestingly, the current Evansville Museum of Arts and Sciences is near this location. This mural and its building no longer exist.
