Description
St. Mary's Hospital at at 3700 Washington Ave. The Marine Hospital, which cared for ill and injured river men, opened in 1856 on the riverfront. It closed and vacated the building in 1870, and in 1872 St. Mary's, operated by the Daughters of Charity, renovated it and opened its hospital there. In 1894 St. Mary's moved to a new facility on First Ave. Ground was broken for its third home, seen here, in 1953, and in 1956, St. Mary's moved to this, its current location. This building, although greatly remodeled and added on to, still stands. St. Mary's joined with St. Vincent's in 2012 and in 2017 assumed that name, but is now called Ascension.
