001526895 520__ $$aWashington Ave., looking east from SE 6th St. (the One Way street). The building is the Washington Avenue Temple, at 100 Washington Ave., built in 1903. This represents the second home for the B'Nai Israel congregation, which predates this building by at least 50 years. In 1925 the building was destroyed by fire, but rebuilt. In 1980, facing dwindling numbers, this congregation merged with Adath Israel and moved to its facility much further east on Washington Ave. The building seen here was sold to Patchwork Central, a community building organization. In 1983, a fire that started in the bakery completely destroyed the building, with the exception of the tower on the left. This building was razed and Patchwork Central built a small, industrial style building, but kept the tower in tribute and memory. The next building up, with the turret, until very recently housed a food co-op that was affiliated with Patchwork Central. That building, at 116 Washington Ave., was built in 1894 according to the tax assessor's database and is in fair condition.
