Description

United States Marine Hospital at 2700 W. Illinois St. This is the second Marine Hospital, built in 1888 to care for river men and service people (a forerunner of the veterans' hospital). It encompassed some 10 acres at the end of Illinois and Indiana streets where they meet Barker Ave. It closed in 1947. It reopened in 1949 as a U.S. Naval and Marines Corps training center, and in 1962 became a U.S. Naval and Marines Corps reserve training center, serving this purpose until 1975. It was razed circa 1984. NOTE: the first Marine Hospital was built in 1856 and operated until 1870, at a different location. That building was repurposed, but finally razed in 1912.
