Description
There are 2 stories that explain this photograph. First, the building, at the corner of NW 6th St. and Court St., was built in 1927 as the gymnasium for the original Central High School. Central High School was originally Evansville High School, the first in the city, dating back before 1868. Another high school was built in 1918 and Evansville High School became Central High School. Central High School moved to its current location in 1970/1971, and the original school, with the exception of this gymnasium, was razed. The gym now is part of the downtown branch of the YMCA. The second part is the use of this facility as ISUE Central Arena at the time of this photograph. ISUE was Indiana State University Evansville, a branch campus of Indiana State University, which opened in 1965. Before the current campus was built, classes were held in an old school on 12th Ave. The first buildings on the current campus were built in 1969, but there was no gymnasium until 1980, thus the need to use this building. The university gained independence in 1985 as the University of Southern Indiana. The 1980 Physical Activities Center (PAC) is now being extensively renovated, with an estimated completion date of phase 1 Fall 2018.
