Description
This Vanderburgh County Courthouse at 201 NW 4th St. was completed in 1890. The building still stands, but is now referred to as the old courthouse, as government offices moved into another building in 1969. It would not have served as a courthouse at the time of this photograph. The courthouse spans the block between NW 4th St. and NW 5th St., bounded by Vine St. and Court St. Similarly to the Court St. side are found above the arches to the doorway proper with the cherubs representing male and female being sculpted again. However, their positions have been reversed with the male being on the left and the female on the right side of the arches. This is the Court St. side. SEE ALSO MSS 184-0196.) The courthouse sits on ground that was once the turnaround for the Wabash and Erie Canal.
