Description

Correspondence from Owen Hamilton to his sister June Meyer (June E. Hooe Hamilton Meyer, 1919-2010 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81471045/june-e_hooe-meyer). He received the fountain pen and is grateful because he cannot get one in the PX. He went to church today and has gone every Sunday since he went in and will continue to do so while in the Army. Things are going well and he likes it better every day he is in. His mind is more at ease and he feels like he's doing his part. He got the pictures and they are good of them. He intends to take some pictures before long; the reason he hasn't so far is that you have to get a permit and he hated to go to that trouble. The second week of basic starts tomorrow and will consist of mostly hikes--those 10 mile with your pack on your back type. They did the obstacle course yesterday that everyone has heard so much about and he found it easier than expected. They had to climb a rope ladder about as high as a house and one fat fellow fell off and he thinks he broke his arm. He was laid out and they had to haul him away in an ambulance. They have WAACs (Women's Army Air Corps) around for that and they are really hard looking. He had planned to call their mother today but the operator told him it would take 4 hours to get the call through so he had to let it go.
