Correspondence from Owen Hamilton to his sister June Meyer and brother-in-law Morgan Meyer (June E. Hooe Hamilton Meyer, 1919-2010 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81471045/june-e_hooe-meyer) and (Morgan G. Meyer, 1916-2000 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/43119273/morgan-g.-meyer). NOTE: Sept. 16 was a Wednesday, so perhaps the letter was begun on Tuesday and finished the next day. It's his second day in Lexington and he thinks he's going to like it. They arrived about 1:00 yesterday and went to the reception center to sign in, where they were fingerprinted and photographed just like convicts. The photograph includes front and side views, with a name plate and a number. They were then given people to contact for lodging. The fellow he is rooming with attended school there a few years ago and knew a woman who ra a boarding house and they are living across the street from the university. They have a new innerspring mattress on their bed and the meals are good--the cost is $6.70/week since they only eat 2 meals per day there. They got the night shift (10:40pm to 6:40am), and since there is a cafeteria at the school, he will eat lunch there at 2:00 am. The school is about a mile out of town (and the bus comes right by their house) and is impressive. They built 6-7 new buildings for 3000 students--the grounds are beautiful and the school modern. Seeing what has been done there since January, it's clear that Uncle Sam hasn't be asleep, since all this was built from scratch. He talks about the equipment they are using and the airplane detectors, and says this is not a military secret. In England they are using equipment that can hear an enemy plane 2.5 miles away and determine its speed and direction of approach, allowing them to calculate what time the planes will arrive. There are detectors that can hear enemy planes 50 miles away and automatically fire anti-aircraft guns at them. If the machines are set up right, they claim to fire direct hits every time. This is supposedly why Germany has eased up on its bombing of England and moved to higher altitude bombing. If he's smart enough and knows enough math, this is the kind of work he's going to get into when he gets into this army. You have to graduate in the top 15% of your class to do so, and there are only 1000 graduates in a class per month. He doesn't know if he can make the cut, but he's going to ""work like hell."" He doesn't know if they have been to Lexington, but it's the biggest little town he's seen. The business district is bigger than Evansville's. They have as many big buildings there as at home, and since the streets run just like they do in Evansville, he feels right at home. The university has a pretty campus with lots of trees and nice buildings. He plans to go to Louisville Saturday since UK (University of Kentucky) plays Georgia there. He says there are 4 home games this year and gives the dates and opponents; if they want to come over, let him know and he'll get tickets. He has written many long letters today, but this is the only place he's been where there's something to actually write about.
