Description
Correspondence from Owen Hamilton to his sister June Meyer (June E. Hooe Hamilton Meyer, 1919-2010 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81471045/june-e_hooe-meyer). After calling all over the island he finally got in contact with Paul. Unforeseen circumstances prevented him (Owen) from getting to Honolulu, but he was able to talk by phone, and they will plan another meeting. Paul looks good and weighs 200 lbs. His outfit was in Saipan, but he was fortunate not to have been with them. You cannot plan anything in the Army, but they hope they might get together on the 9th. He went on a conducted tour of a sugar cane factory and it was refined (joke). It was interesting to see how the cane was brought in and the process of making it into sugar. The stalks are used in the furnaces to produce the sugar, and they go so far as to take the mud back out to the fields. The irrigation system is incredible and takes a lot of water. The crop grows 2 years before it can be harvested, and the same plant can be harvested 3 times. He hopes to be able to tour the Dole pineapple factory, too. He is surprised that June is going to teach again this year, and asks about the family, particularly if her husband has heard anything from Uncle Sam.
