Description

Correspondence from Owen Hamilton to his sister June Meyer (June E. Hooe Hamilton Meyer, 1919-2010 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81471045/june-e_hooe-meyer). He's on his 2nd month there and it's getting colder all the time. They have no winter clothing and no stove in their barracks so there's no rest for the wicked. It's so cold in the mornings he has to break the ice off his blankets and his blood doesn't thaw until around 9:00. He thinks the army is trying to make it as hard as possible before it lets them go, but he can take anything they throw (he tells himself). He might start his long trip home in the middle of January. He will travel east and not stop until he gets to Evansville. He yearns for this and it makes the time pass slowly, so he prays for strength. They're finally seeing some of the good food that had been sent--they thought it had been thrown away since they did not get it. They're getting more butter in a day than they used to get in a week and the steaks are tender. Roast beef one meal and steaks the next--if they don't stop he'll have to gripe about too much good food!
