Description

Correspondence from Owen Hamilton to his sister June Meyer and brother-in-law Morgan Meyer (June E. Hooe Hamilton Meyer, 1919-2010 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81471045/june-e_hooe-meyer) and (Morgan G. Meyer, 1916-2000 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/43119273/morgan-g.-meyer). He thanks them for the ring, saying it's really swell, and that they have treated him very well for being away and he hopes to be able to repay their kindness one day. He's waiting for the day when they can all be together and he won't have to take off in a week or so. Monday night he goes up for his final Warrant Officer exam and if he's lucky to get it will be the best thing and he may even get to come home. It seems almost too good to be true, to lve as an officer and enjoy the finer things while in the army, so he's not getting his hopes up. If he does get it he will feel proud since it's competitive and anyone in the division can apply. Hope and pray for him and he will let them know as soon as he finds out. He's still at Camp Rucker but is not sure for how much longer. They have German prisoners there working on the barracks and beautifying the area. Today they were watching them do some repairing and he said something to them about being the master race. It gives you a funny feeling to be so close to these boys who look just like us and yet we are out to kill each other. He hopes if he's captured by them he will get as good treatment as they do. They are mostly good Aryan stock--tall and blond-headed. Some work hard but you can spot a gold brick. They will make good WPA material, and it's remarkable how quickly they learn the American way of loafing. If the Fuhrer could see them no, no telling what he would think. He was talking to a Master Sergeant (apparently one of the prisoners) and asked what he thought of them bombing Berlin, and he said they might say that but he doesn't believe it. One of them (prisoners) wanted to see Chicago to see how badly it was bombed, and couldn't understand how New York was rebuilt so fast after the bombing it had taken. ""No telling what the Fuhrer has fed them."" He asks if Bob (no further identification) is still doing that dive bombing.
