Description

Correspondence from Owen Hamilton to his sister June Meyer and brother-in-law Morgan Meyer (June E. Hooe Hamilton Meyer, 1919-2010 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81471045/june-e_hooe-meyer) and (Morgan G. Meyer, 1916-2000 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/43119273/morgan-g.-meyer). Addressing this letter to Mom and Pop, he's excited and relieved to welcome his new niece, Virginia and is thrilled to be a first time uncle. He got the message when he was on Hawaii but was headed back to Oahu that day and couldn't write. He hopes he gets to see his niece before she goes off to college. He wanted to send a cablegram but at the moment he was 6000 ft. above sea level, out in the lava fields, so this wouldn't work out. He hopes she understands his situation about not being able to write until now. Even the blue outfit he sent was wrong, but maybe she can dye it pink and write him down as a bad guesser. He wants to see pictures, and says between both families, they should be able to produce a pretty good looking girl. He talks about the temperature variations on Hawaii and how surprising they were in so short a period of time. He even did a little mountain climbing, mainly just to say that he had done it. He also spent a little time in Hilo, the main town, to take a good hot shower and get rid of the dust. He reminds here that Hawaii is where he spent his 5 day pass and so is familiar with it now. Going over he rode on an LST (landing ship tank) and came back on an APA (Haskell-class attack transports (APA) were amphibious assault ships). He likes riding in the LST but doesn't think he'd enjoy it in rough weather. Whenever he goes out like that he goes to the radio room and talks to the sailors. He thus gets to see the equipment and help pass the time. The boys in the Navy have a nice set-up--they serve coffee all the time and have some good music. He told them how rough it was to sleep on the ground and one of them offered him a bed. They didn't have beds that nice in civilian life--an inner spring mattress with white wool blankets! He thinks he could sleep a week in one. He's tired and will be out in the field soon, so he wants to make the most of time in a bed. He is sending them a picture of the WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) he mentioned just to show that he still gets around a little, although it's very little. In the states he thinks he could do a little better but here she's worth her weight in gold and she has the weight as they can see. They are not to let Emmy (no further identification) see this as he wants her to feel sorry for him. His new battle cry is ""out of the sticks in 46"" or ""from hell to heaven in 47."" It will likely be ""the golden gate in 48"" although he would like to be ""home alive in 45."" If they read Time magazine, they will see that he is a faithful reader. He's heard from Bob (no further identification) who says he may be over in a couple of months, and expresses the hope that he will be around to see him. When he's in town he's going to look for a gift for a girl baby.
