Description

Correspondence from Owen Hamilton to his sister June Meyer (June E. Hooe Hamilton Meyer, 1919-2010 (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81471045/june-e_hooe-meyer). He's still just waiting to find out where and when he will be sent. He has to go for another exam for the Warrant Officer and has never been called so he doubts he will hear any more about it. He was called to the chapel the other day. From his service record they've seen that he has sung in a choir, so once again he's straining his vocal cords. They sing for church on Sundays and practice twice a week--Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-5, so he doesn't have to stand retreat those nights, which has its good points. He would like to know where they will be going, but all he hears are rumors, with nothing for certain. He wanted to call his mother, but there was a long line ahead of him and he doesn't expect much luck. The only sort of entertainment is largely movies, and he saw Lady in the Dark with Ginger Rogers 91944, Paramount Pictures) and liked it. They also had a USO show, one of the best he's seen. They were in the field for the last time last week, with supply lines supposedly cut off and the men on C rations. He and some others foresaw this and brought along plenty of candy, potato chips, and 20 ham sandwiches. They made bed rolls and didn't get up until 7:00 in the morning. The day that had C rations they were eating ham on rye 3 times/day. The remaining time should be easy--just routine stuff and not in the field. He thanks them again for the ring they gave him, saying he's proud of it. He asks about Bob (no further identification) and how he's doing in the Army. He guesses he has had enough KP to not like it, and wonders if he's made the flying cadets yet. He got his first airplane ride in an artillery plane and it made him sad he hadn't gotten into the flying cadets because it was such a thrill to be up over everything looking down on things, He hasn't heard from them recently and hopes they are OK--he asks if Morgan (her husband) is just working and getting bored. He would love to see them, but this will have to wait until the war is over. Starting this month he's going to buy a $25 bond monthly, and when he gets overseas and gets a 20% increase in pay, he'll buy a $50/month. If the war is ever over, he'll have something to start on. He asks how Bosse High School is doing in the state tourney. (Bosse won the state basketball tourney in 1943 and 1944.)
