Description

Looking down and across downtown Evansville, with the Ohio River in the background. The church in the foreground is the German Methodist Episcopal Church at 25 Upper 4th St., on the corner with Vine St. The original church was dedicated in 1846 and located on Vine St. between 2nd St. and 3rd St. The church moved to the location shown here in 1865 and dedicated the church 2 years later. In 1917 the name was changed to 4th St. Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1937 this church merged with Bayard Park Methodist Episcopal Church and moved to that location. At that time this building became an annex to the courthouse and was razed in 1973. Continuing the history of the congregation, Bayard Park Methodist moved to the corner of Lincoln Ave. and Kelsey Ave. in 1950 and was renamed the Methodist Temple. That church still stands and has an active congregation today. The building with the dormers and light colored roof, closer to the river and running perpendicular to this church, is the Post Office and Customs House at what is now 200 NW 2nd St. It was completed in 1879 and appears to be lacking the wings added in 1918. It is now called the old post office, as it was abandoned by the federal government in 1969 and acquired by the city in 1977. Today it houses a event venue.
