Description
Posey Chapel cemetery. This pavilion stands where the original chapel stood until it burned in an arson in 1972 (SEE MSS 129-042 for details). The first burial in Posey Cemetery was that of George Morrow, who died July 14, 1845. At this time the timber was felled but had not been cleared away, hence the grave was made amid the logs and brush. (http://www.ingenweb.org/inlaporte/Worship/Posey/PoseyHistory2.htm) This was the first official burial, but old transcriptions of this cemetery show that two infant sons of Thomas and Lucetta (Sutherland) Foster, who died in 1838 and 1839, are buried here. It is possible that others were buried on the hill before it was designated as a cemetery or, as we have seen at other pioneer cemeteries individuals first buried near the family home may have been removed and reinterred at the cemetery at a later date.
