Description
In this aerial view, the ornate Romanesque building is at 200 NW 2nd St., now called the old post office. It was built 1873-1879. Abandoned by the federal government in 1969, it was acquired by the city in 1977 and currently holds a catering/event venue. To the left of this, at 118 Vine St., is the YWCA, built in 1924. It still stands today and is still a YWCA. Across 2nd St. is Kenny Kent Chevrolet Co. Inc. at 109 NW 2nd St., at the corner with Vine St. The various car lots stretched back to 4th St. The dealership still exists, although not at this location. Across Vine St. from the YWCA is The Courier/The Press Business Office --Evansville Printing Corp. at 201 NW 2nd St. The first newspaper in Evansville, The Evansville Courier, first published in January 1845. It went through name and ownership changes, but eventually became the morning newspaper, with The Evansville Press coming out in the afternoon. The 1937 Ohio River flood led to the Courier's press being out of commission. The Press was at a different location and was able to print both newspapers, and the Evansville Print Corp., established out of this cooperation, came into being in 1939. In 1990 both newspapers moved into a new building on Walnut St. The Press published its last issue on December 31, 1998, having been bought out by the Courier. Today's single newspaper is called the Evansville Courier & Press. The building shown here dates back to the late 1930s, remodeled 1970, and was razed in 1993.
