Description

YMCA at 203 NW 5th St., at the corner with Vine St. The YMCA moved into this building 1913/1914, although as an organization it has been in Evansville at least since 1891. According to one source, this building was vacated in 1981 when the Y moved next door, but reoccupied again in 1997 when the Y expanded back into it. When Central High School was located on 6th St., a gym was built for it in 1927. The school building has since been razed, but the gym still stands and as of 1979, is part of the YMCA. Today's Downtown YMCA extends down Vine St. to NW 6th St., across NW 6th St. to Court St., and halfway back Court St. towards NW 5th St. In other words, it encompasses almost the entire block, save for the space occupied by a law office at NW 5th St. and Court St. What is seen here still stands (different roof line), although the current street address/main entrance is now on NW 6th St. There is also another YMCA on the east side of town.
