Description

Jefferson Ave. Cumberland Presbyterian at 333 Jefferson Ave. Organized in 1841, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church built a church in 1851 on the corner of 2nd and Chestnut. The church was replaced by a beautiful new building across 2nd St in 1876. [This church] spawned a church [at 123] Jefferson Ave. [in] 1900. After a merger between the Presbyterian and Cumberland Presbyterian churches, the congregation was forced to move to a new location in 1907 up Jefferson Ave. [The permanent structure at 333 Jefferson Ave. was built in 1911 and closed in 2003.] (historic evansville.com, various entries) NOTE: there were a number of churches with the same/very similar names that merged, split, and remerged in a different configuration over the years. It is thus challenging to isolate the history of any one building. The building shown here now houses an inner city ministry called The Potter's Wheel.
