Description

Close-up of fire damage at Woods Rexall Drugs 1022 SE 2nd St., formerly 1144 Upper 2nd St., at the corner with Parrett St., with crowd surveying the damage. This location was originally occupied by Haynie's Drugs, built around 1875 and sold to Woods in 1928. That building was damaged by the 1937 flood and then burned in 1944. The newspaper account of the March 26, 1944 blaze put the damage estimate at $40,000. There were 13 people living on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building, and they all escaped unharmed but with a loss of property. The fire was discovered/reported by 2 newsboys around 7:00 a.m. Thick smoke and a slate roof hindered firefighters. The origin of the fire had not been determined by the time of this report.
