H.A. Woods (left) with university president Dr. David L. Rice (right) at ISUE graduation. Henry Alexander Woods was born May 17, 1886 outside of Louisville, KY. He worked his way through pharmacy school at the University of Kentucky, graduating at age 18 in 1904. He became an Evansville businessman in 1916 with the purchase of the first of 13 drug stores. He was one of the founders of the Downtown Kiwanis club and was known in the community for his activities and for always wearing a red tie. He died January 12, 1978. Established as a branch campus of Indiana State University in 1965, in 1985 the university was made a separate state university, the University of Southern Indiana (USI) In 1974 Mr. Woods received an honorary Doctorate of Law from USI, then Indiana State University Evansville.
