Description
Shawneetown, IL was devastated by the 1937 Oho River flood and the bulk of the population moved to a new location further inland. The small village of Old Shawneetown (2010 Census population of 193) remains and is shown here. This is the Shawneetown Bank National Historic Site (although it is apparently inactive and not open to the public). Built 1839-1841, this is the oldest building in Illinois built specifically as a bank. In its early days it was the Bank of Illinois/State Bank of Illinois. It closed its doors in 1942. It is at the corner of Main and Washington Sts.
