Evansville's 17th Rifle Co. Marine Reserves attended summer training at Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot (now called Hawthorne Army Depot). With over 147,000 acres/226 square miles, it is the world's largest depot and a frequent site for desert training. This photograph appeared in the July 9, 1959 edition of the Evansville Courier with this caption: Area Reservists in Training.""Here they come," says gunner W.E. Harris, Elberfeld, to PFC Larry Clary, 720 Rheinlander-av. [sic] The two men are with the 17th Rifle Company USMCR, Evansville's local Reserve Unit, now on two weeks field training, NAD Hawthorne, Nev."
