Description
Two nuns painting a chain link fence at the corner of Bellemeade Ave. and S. Garvin St. The building across Bellemeade from them is Lincoln School at 635 Lincoln Ave. This block of Bellemeade (between S. Garvin St., seen here, and S. Morton St.) encompasses the school, church, rectory, and convent for St. John's Catholic Church, so these Sisters of Providence are painting the convent fence. Historical Note: Lincoln School, just visible beyond the wall, was the only black school in the area, and served students K-12 from 1928-1962, when it became a K-8 school. Upon court-ordered desegregation in 1972, neighborhood students were bused to other schools. Lincoln School continues in operation today.
