Assumption Church at 119 NW7th St. was built in 1872 and in 1944 became the cathedral for the newly formed Diocese of Evansville. The church was sold to the city in 1965 and the last mass heard January 17, 1965. The building was razed in May 1965 to make way for the new Civic Center complex. The Winfield K. Denton Federal Building now stands on this site. Here demolition is under way.
