Description

This photograph was taken at the same time as one that appeared in the February 26, 1979 edition of the Evansville Press. The caption read,""Stranded vehicles lined Interstate 57 south of Benton, Ill., after up to 2 feet of snow made travel in Southern Illinois impossible. More than 3,000 travelers are estimated to have sought shelter in churches, schools, and civic centers because all motels were filled. Volunteers in four-wheel-drive vehicles and snowmobiles rescued many of the motorists from I-57 and I-24 in Southern Illinois." The storm was on February 25, 1979.
