Description

Thought to be T.C. Bridwell & Company (drug store) at 301 N. Main St. Thomas C. Bridwell was the mayor of Evansville 1880-1886. At some time in the 1880s, this building was hugely remodeled and German Bank moved to this location (see MSS 228-0658). Note the sign about stamping our consumption. Consumption (tuberculosis) was the leading cause of death in the U.S. in the 19th century, with 1 in 5 deaths attributed to it. Not until 1882 was the infectious, bacterial nature of the disease known.
