Description

Military transports used during the blizzard of 1978. The Davidson Jewett Tire Company Inc. seen in this photograph was located at 900 Main St., at the intersection with 9th St. On 1/17/78 there were 16 inches of snow on the ground, with 7 still left on 1/25. That day 4 more inches fell, and winds of 51 mph caused 8 ft. drifts and whiteout conditions, with a wind chill of 50 degrees below zero. People were trapped in their cars or at work if they weren't home, and businesses closed for 2 days. Some 80 people died in 16 states.
