Description
Evansville's 17th Rifle Co. Marine Reserves attended summer training at Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot (now called Hawthorne Army Depot). With over 147,000 acres/226 square miles, it is the world's largest depot and a frequent site for desert training. Here is a location the soldiers may have visited when on leave-- Piper's Opera House in Virginia City, NV. This building was built in 1885 and replaced an 1878 structure which replaced an 1863 structure, both of which burned down.
