Description
E. F. Owen and Company Store: Located at 502 Main Street, on the southeast corner of Main and Church. This grocery store had been at this location since before 1888 and had persisted until sometime in the late 1890s. This plat belonged to Owen and Company on the 1869 Plat Map and the other side of this building did indeed house a hardware and agricultural implements store. In all probability, this was the location of E. F. Owen and Company. By the mid to late 1890s the Owen grocery store had been replaced with a clothing store, which only lasted a short time and was in turn replaced by Armstrongs Place Saloon by 1907 at the latest. This historic photo shows a group of men standing around outside of Owen's Shop. To the right of Owen's Shop is an unknown saloon, which was not on the Sanborn Maps until 1899, thus the photo must have been taken after 1893 at some point after the saloon replaced the pharmacy in that building.
