Working Men's Institute: This building is located 407 Tavern Street. The Working Men's Institute was founded in 1838, by William Maclure, as a library for working people, not just those who were wealthy. Initially there were a total of 160 Working Men's Institutes, 144 in the state of Indiana and 16 in the state of Illinois, however, the one in New Harmony Indiana is the only one which still remains. The present location of the WMI was completed in 1894, now a National Historic Landmark, before this it was housed in the old Harmonist Church from 1834 until the new building was completed. The WMI also houses a museum as well as the oldest working library in the state of Indiana. This photo shows a Robert Owen commemorative coin. The inscription on obverse reads ""Robert Owen Born At Newton North Wales, May 14, 1771"". The reverse inscription reads ""Rational Religion consists in the knowledge that the character of man is formed for him by the power which creates his organization and by the external circumstances which exist around him from his birth. Especially by the society with which he associates in having charity, in consequence of this knowledge of human nature. For the convictions, feelings and conduct of the human race and in promoting, to the utmost in our power, the wellbeing and happiness of every man, woman, and child without regard to their class, sect, party, country, or color"".
