Transparencies and Negatives Collection: Historic photographs. McKinley and Hobart 1896 Presidential Campaign. William McKinley was a U.S. congressman from 1876 until 1890 and was Governor of Ohio from January 1892 to January 1896 at which time he ran for President of the United States, which he won. He was the 25th President from 1897 until he was assassinated, being shot by Leon Czolgosz on September 6, 1901, which he succumbed to on September 14, 1901. His Vice President was Garret Augustus Hobart, who served from 1897 until his death, from heart disease, on November 21, 1899. This photo was taken in front of the Autrieth House which is located on the corner of Tavern and Brewery Streets, also known as Wiley�s Corner. The band wagon was built by the New Harmony Band in 1871.
