Description

Rappite Farming Warehouse: The Harmonist Red Barn, or more exact, Mrs. J. W. Hiatt's Grain Warehouse, latter George Hiatt's Grain Warehouse, was located on three plats in the southwest corner of town block 6 G. Most of the large building was located on what is now 710 and 716 Steam Mill Street. The original office was located at the exact corner of East and Steam Mill Streets in the southwest corner of what is now 704 Steam Mill Street. The original office was demolished between 1893 and 1899. There was a Hiatt farm, listed as Mary F. Hiatt on the 1900 plat map, directly north of the east side of New Harmony adjacent to the river. On the right side of the photo is probably the house at 720 Steam Mill and the original house at 726 Steam Mill, now demolished and replaced in 1946. Notice also the very early hanging street light on the right side of the photo.
