Description

Culpepper's Blacksmith Shop: William Culpepper was born in 1853 to William and Sarah Culpepper. William Sr. was a blacksmith and his first-born son, William Jr. followed in his father's footsteps. At some point in the 1870s the family, along with the young William moved from Mt. Vernon to New Harmony. Culpepper is listed in the 1882 Posey County History and Directory as being a Blacksmith in the town of New Harmony. This historic photo is more likely to be of William Culpepper Jr. as by this time William Sr. would have been much older. The most likely location for this blacksmith shop was in the 1890s off Brewery Street between Tavern and Church, on the north side of the alley. The back of The Mews building now, in 2021, occupies this space.
