Description

Chaffin House: This house is located on the northwest corner of Church and First Streets. During the mid and late nineteenth century the property belonged to Thomas Ferguson and there was a house on this plat before the Chaffin House, still present in 2022 albeit somewhat remodeled, was constructed in 1905. Before this time Lycurgus Chaffin owned property on Main Street near the corner with Steam Mill, that house was demolished at some point between March 1913, it can be seen in several flood photos, and the 1929 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. This is a photo of the Chaffin family posed in the back yard of their home on Church Street. In this photo are standing left to right: Edward Chaffin Ford (3/5/1880 11/14/1956), his wife Pansy Storton Ford (1/5/1884 10/12/1942), Charles Lycurgus Chaffin (1/6/1881 11/30/1955), and his wife Clara Emma Baechle Chaffin (4/25/1879 9/8/1933). Seated left to right: Edith Applegate Chaffin (9/4/1849 1/30/1909), and husband John Horatio Chaffin (12/21/1847 5/16/1921).
