Description
E. F. Owen and Company Store: Located at 502 Main Street, on the southeast corner of Main and Church. This grocery store had been at this location since before 1888 and had persisted until sometime in the late 1890s. This plat belonged to Owen and Company on the 1869 Plat Map and the other side of this building did indeed house a hardware and agricultural implements store. In all probability, this was the location of E. F. Owen and Company. By the mid to late 1890s the Owen grocery store had been replaced with a clothing store, which only lasted a short time and was in turn replaced by Armstrongs Place Saloon by 1907 at the latest. A large group of men are gathered in front of the hardware store side. The building on the left was later remodeled and faced with stone, in 1920, when it became New Harmony Bank and Trust Company. Note the delivery wagon on the left side hitched with a team of two horses. Men listed on the photo : Malcolm Eagle, H. C. Husband, W. W. Robb,(B)lump, Will Davis, and Herbert Brown. It is unknown who is who.
