Description

Centennial Saloon Building: This building is located at 510 Main Street. This historic brick structure was constructed before 1888 (UA58 7516 large brick building), most likely as the United States was celebrating its Centennial (100 year) Anniversary in 1876. The plat itself, along with the adjacent plat to the south, had belonged to William Baldwin, according to the 1869 New Harmony Plat Map. Heart of Harmony Antiques shop was located in the building in the early 1970s (UA58 7604 right side). Indiana Bell Telephone Exchange and office was located on the second floor of the building by 1907. It had previously been located next door on the second floor of the Heckman Building in the late 1890s (UA58 7512 near center of photo). New Harmony Tourist Lodgings office was located on the second floor in the 1970s (UA58 7604 far right side). In this photo two construction workers are applying the new sign above the front door, based on the original painted one.
